The number one mistake I see with AC diagnosis is recharging without first checking for a leak. If the refrigerant is low, it went somewhere. Skipping the leak check means you’re back in six months doing the same job—or dealing with a failed compressor that runs dry.”
A lot of drivers assume warm air from the AC means they just need a recharge. Sometimes that’s true. But modern AC systems don’t lose refrigerant under normal operation — they’re a closed circuit. If the level is low, there is a leak, and a recharge alone won’t fix it. We check pressure, look for oily residue around fittings and the compressor, and use UV dye when the source isn’t obvious.
On the heating side, the most commonly missed diagnosis is a thermostat that’s stuck open. The engine never fully warms up, so the coolant never gets hot enough to heat the cabin — and people assume it’s the heater core, which is a much bigger job. We always confirm thermostat function before going further. Diagnosis first saves you money every time.
The other thing worth mentioning: your cabin air filter. Most people have never replaced theirs. A severely clogged filter cuts airflow so much that even a working AC or heater can’t keep up. It’s one of the cheapest services on the vehicle and one of the most overlooked.

Warm air from your AC has several possible causes—the most common is low refrigerant from a slow leak. Others include a failing compressor, a faulty expansion valve, a clogged condenser, or a blend door that's not directing air through the evaporator. The only way to know for certain is a diagnosis. We perform a pressure test and visual inspection before recommending any repair, so you're not paying to fix the wrong thing.
A heater blowing cold air is most often a thermostat stuck in the open position—the engine never fully warms up, so there's no heat available for the cabin. It can also be a low coolant level, a failing heater core, a clogged heater core, or a blend door actuator problem. We diagnose the specific cause before recommending a repair, starting with the simplest and least expensive possibilities first.
Most manufacturers recommend an AC inspection every two years or if you notice performance issues. Refrigerant can slowly permeate seals over time, so a gradual loss of cooling over several seasons is common. We also recommend replacing the cabin air filter every 15,000 to 25,000 miles — a clogged filter is one of the most overlooked causes of poor AC and heat performance.
In most cases, yes — a non-functioning AC won't prevent your vehicle from running. However, if the compressor is failing and making noise, continuing to run the AC can damage other components in the system. It's also worth noting that in extreme heat, a working AC is a safety consideration, especially with children or elderly passengers.
